Update 24th March

ONE DAY EVENT
A day of Mindfulness will take place on Saturday April 1st from 10.30 until 3.30 in Galilee, Boyle.  This day will be facilitated by Maura McGuinness, qualified mindfulness teacher. The practice of mindfulness is about being present and awake to each moment of our daily lives. This day is suitable for beginners and more experienced practitioners alike. FASHION SHOW
Magees Fashion Shop and Aidan Ray Menswear will be hosting a fashion show in St Joseph’s Hall Boyle on Thursday 6th April at 8pm with all proceeds to Scoil na nAingeal Naofa.

Curlew Walkers Club

Cookery foundation course
A Free Cookery Foundation Course will be taking place this Easter in Abbey Community College/ Boyle Enterprise Centre. This course is suitable for anyone seeking employment in the Restaurant/Hotel/Nursing Home or Deli Sectors. Tonya Keane BA (Hons) Culinary Arts will be the Tutor for this course which will take place on Monday 10th April – Friday 28th April from 9.30 until 4.30. Bright Sparks Quiz
The Boyle Christmas Lights Crew invite all Businesses, Community groups, Clubs and friends to join them on Good Friday 14th April in St. Josephs Hall in search of the Brightest Sparks in Boyle! Table of four costs €40, and proceeds will go the Christmas Lights fund.
The crew thank you sincerely for your continued support over the years, which has enabled buy the lights, add new additions and continue to expand our array of lights- including the lighting of same over the festive period. Good Friday Night is a guaranteed night of fun and enjoyment and we appeal to all to support the event. Boyle Annual Pike Angling Festival will be taking place on the Easter weekend, Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th April on Lough Key, Boyle. €5000 guaranteed prize fund 1st Prize €2,500 plus the Moonstone Jewellers Perpetual Cup. In addition, Saturday and Sunday’s winners will each receive €1175 in prize money. Entry Fee per person - Adults €60 / Juniors €20 (Junior’s must fish for junior prize and be accompanied by a fee paying adult). Tawnytaskin Community Centre
The annual Afternoon Tea Event will once again take place this Easter Sunday and Monday April 16th and 17th. This year all monies raised will go to purchase a defibrillator. It is the Committee’s intention to place the defibrillator outside of the building in case of emergencies. You are invited to celebrate National Poetry Day at lunchtime, in Boyle, Ballaghaderreen and Roscommon libraries. National Poetry Day takes place on Thursday 27th April and events will be held in the three libraries at 1.30pm that day. Light refreshments provided, and all are welcome. The theme this year is “movement, migration, and home” and you can get involved. For a chance to have your poetry displayed in your favourite library, please submit one or two poems to roscommonpoetryday@gmail.com during the month of March. Tell the organisers which library you use, and include the title of the poem, your name on the poem itself, and if you’re a younger person give your age and school too. Poems can also be handed in to your local librarian.

Entry will soon open for Ireland’s Toughest Muckers challenge which will take place once again in Lough Key Forest Park on Saturday June 10th. A new website will be launched later this month for the event and a dedicated entry section will be available on the website. The 10k obstacle challenge will have a number of new features this year according to one of the organisers A “Little Muckers” course will be added this year for participants under 16 years of age with all monies raised from this section going to a nominated children’s charity. This is the fifth year for Toughest Muckers to be held in Boyle and early indications are that it will be a sell-out event. And remember, your entry gets you free beer, food and entertainment at the finish line.

Tidy Towns & Amenity Grants Scheme 2017
Roscommon County Council is currently accepting applications under the Tidy Towns & Amenity Grants Scheme 2017 Applications will be accepted from: - Tidy Towns Associations - Local Development Groups - Sub-Aqua Groups Funding is available for eligible small scale capital amenity projects. Please note that it is important that all sections of the Scheme are read in full before completed application forms are submitted. DAFFODIL DAY
Every three minutes in Ireland a person receives a cancer diagnosis. In order to provide information, support and care to people affected by cancer, the Irish Cancer Society needs to raise €3.98 million this year on Daffodil Day, March 24th. Volunteers in Boyle are determined to show their support for people in the community who are dealing with cancer in their lives. On Daffodil Day they will be selling daffodils and other daffodil bits and pieces!
Daffodil Day, the flagship fundraising day of the Irish Cancer Society and the longest running collection day in Ireland, funds services to support cancer patients and their families on every step of the cancer journey. Services include the Society’s Freephone Cancer Nurseline 1800 200 700 and 13 Daffodil Centres around the country where anyone worried about cancer can speak to a Cancer Nurse.

Golf Classic Fundraiser
A Golf Classic will be held in Boyle Golf Club for Boyle Courthouse & Model Railway on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th March. Teams of 4 - price €100 per team / Lunch is included in entrance fee - your support is most welcome - confirmation is needed by Tuesday 21st February

Curlew Walkers Club

BOYLE ST PATRICKS DAY PARADE
This year’s Boyle St Patricks Day Parade promises to be the best ever with a special International flavour including traditional Samba Dancers! Our Parade will commence at 3.30pm on Friday 17th March. We encourage as many businesses, clubs and associations in Boyle to prepare over the coming weeks to partake in the Parade and enter a float. Entering a float is free so do avail of the opportunity! 1st Prize for Overall Winner is €500 with a runner up of €200; There is also a Junior Section (under 16) 1st Prize is €200 and runner up €100 and of course the Perpetual Cup for the best dressed Window display in town. The success of the Parade depends on the Community and Businesses to get involved and showcase Boyle at its best. Taking part with a float in the Parade offers a great opportunity to promote your club, school or business which we’re all very proud of. Over the coming weeks letters will be dropped into businesses seeking contributions towards the Parade and the organising committee thank the Community always for the warm welcome they receive and their financial support.

ARDCARNE GARDEN CENTRE
A Lawn Care Clinic will be taking place in Ardcarne Garden Centre Boyle & Roscommon Town on Saturday 18th March from 11.30 until 12.30. Discover the secrets to a greener, healthier lawn and pick up some great tips on all aspects of lawn care. Free Event – All Welcome.

ALBUM LAUNCH
Well known Boyle musician John Carty and his daughter Maggie have released a duet album with the rather catchy title of Settle out of Court. The album will be launched in the pair’s home town of Boyle at Whistlers Bar and Grill on Thursday 16th March. Local singer songwriter Donal O’Connor will officially launch the CD and proceedings will start at 9.00pm upstairs in the venue. Everyone is invited to attend the launch which will be followed by a music session downstairs so all musicians most particularly welcome!

BOYLE FAMILY LIFE CENTRE
A new family support drop in facility has commenced on Wednesday mornings at Boyle Family Life Centre. It is being held from 9.30am-12pm during the school term. This is a safe space for parents/families to call in and receive support and a listening ear for their family and parenting dilemmas. The drop in is an inter-agency pilot project together with Boyle FRC, Foroige and Tusla.

ARDCARNE GARDEN CENTRE
National Tree Week will be taking place up until Sunday12th March, to celebrate trees. As part of the celebrations Ardcarne Garden Centre, Boyle and Roscommon Town, are offering a free tree sapling to customers on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th March.

Boyle Men’s Shed
The Irish Men’s Sheds Association is embarking on another round of regional “cluster meetings”  These get-togethers are a great opportunity to network with other sheds in your area and to catch up on the latest information and updates from the Irish Men’s Sheds Association and its key partner organisations. The meeting will take place in King House Boyle on Thursday 9th March from 10.30 until 12.30.

Boyle ICA
An exploratory meeting to set up Boyle ICA (Irish Countrywomen's Association) will take place in the Resource Centre on February 28th at 8:00pm – all welcome.

Neven Maguire in Kilronan Castle
A cookery demonstration with the renowned chef Neven Maguire will take place on Wednesday 1st March 2017 in Kilronan Castle. Wine & Canape Reception from 7pm with an opportunity to browse the local produce and craft stands. Demo starts at 8pm with a raffle for great prizes. Tickets €20 and are on sale at Kilronan Castle, Surprises and Boyle Motor Works. Proceeds in aid of Ardcarne Community Childcare Services and a contribution will be given to St. Michaels and St Patricks NS Cootehall.

Annual Book Fair
St. Joseph’s Boys School will be holding their Annual Book Fair on Wednesday March 1st  9.00am until 9.30am, Thursday 2nd 3pm until 4pm Friday 3rd March 9am until 9.30 am Monday 6th March 9pm until 9.30 and Tuesday March 7th  from 9am until 9.30 with all commission earned going towards books for their classrooms and library. Support for their Book Fair is greatly appreciated.

Boyle Chamber of Commerce welcome Cathriona O’Shea from Seetec who will give a lunchtime overview on the benefits of using the Jobpath programme for any future recruitment requirements businesses may have. This a free recruitment service available to all employers whereby Seetec screen, train and offer in-job support to employers with the aim to successfully place suitable employees to match the needs of employers, saving the employer time and costs. Most Jobpath participants are eligible for the Jobplus initiative. Cathriona will be available to answer any questions you may have during this lunchtime briefing. The Briefing will commence at 1.10pm conclude before 2pm on Wednesday 1st March in Boyle Enterprise Centre and light refreshments will be provided.

This year’s Boyle St Patricks Day Parade promises to be the best ever with a special International flavour including traditional Samba Dancers! Our Parade will commence at 3.30pm on Friday 17th March. We encourage as many businesses, clubs and associations in Boyle to prepare over the coming weeks to partake in the Parade and enter a float. Entering a float is free so do avail of the opportunity! 1st Prize for Overall Winner is €500 with a runner up of €200; There is also a Junior Section (under 16) 1st Prize is €200 and runner up €100 and of course the Perpetual Cup for the best dressed Window display in town. The success of the Parade depends on the Community and Businesses to get involved and showcase Boyle at its best. Taking part with a float in the Parade offers a great opportunity to promote your club, school or business which we’re all very proud of. Over the coming weeks letters will be dropped into businesses seeking contributions towards the Parade and the organising committee thank the Community always for the warm welcome they receive and their financial support.

In addition, Saturday and Sunday’s winners will each receive €1175 in prize money. BOYLE GOLF CLUB SPRING LEAGUE
The Spring League sponsored by PD Golf has entered the business end of proceedings with two of the four groups having completed all of their group matches. In group 1, Peggy Feely & Kevin O’Connor have secured their place in the final by winning their final match 2 up to leave them on a five match aggregate of +12, a score sufficient to top the group. Shane Loftus & Regina McLoughlin finished one behind and will possibly take one of the two best runner’s spots. In the second group, Paul Connolly & Seth Meredith lead and are in a strong position to top the group. Their total score of 9 up leaves them 6 clear of 3 other pairs, one of them being Dave Purser & Claire Cryan who have a game outstanding. Moving to group 3, Vincent Egan & Lewis Shaw have completed a clean sweep in their group finishing with a total aggregate of +18, the highest score recorded in the competition. They are followed by Pat Conroy & Susan O’Mahoney who won 4 of their 5 games, finishing with a total score of +13. In the final group, Michael Rush & Gerry O’Hara continues to lead on +8, followed by Paddy McLoughlin & Mandy Toolan on +5. Also, don’t rule out Willie Tiernan & Sandra McCrann who are only 3 holes further back with one game yet to be played.

Food Hygiene Training
A Food Hygiene Course (HACCP Level 1 & 2) will take place in Boyle Enterprise Centre on Tuesday February 21st at Boyle Enterprise Centre 9.30 until 4.30. Community Games
Boyle Community Games Quiz will be held Friday 24th February 6pm in the Resource Centre, Boyle. The quiz is open to children aged over 10 and under 14 years at 31st July 2017. It is an individual event and the top 4 will form a team to represent Boyle parish. Entry fee €2. Please bring pen – paper will be provided. The County final will take place in Elphin Hall on Friday, 3rd March.

24 hour fast to be held in Boyle
A 24 hour fast will take place in Boyle from Saturday 25th to Sunday 26th February. The fast will conclude with an Ecumenical Service in Boyle Church of Ireland on Sunday at 5.30pm.
Proceeds raised will be shared between Roscommon Safe Link Boyle and Invisible Traffick Sligo. If you could contribute the value of one meal in support of the fast it would be appreciated.

Pieta House is the National Centre for the prevention of Suicide and Self-Harm and Suicide Bereavement Support. We would like to ask for community help to bring Darkness into Light to Boyle for 2017. This very successful charity 5km Run/Walk event is now in its 9th year and will take place in 160 locations throughout the world all starting at 4.15am on the 6th May 2017. The Playground Committee in Ballinafad are organising a Recycled/Used Clothing Collection on Saturday 18th February at Ballinafad Hall from 11am until1pm.
Items accepted: All clean Clothes, handbags, hats, belts, pairs of shoes, towels & bed-linen.
Not Accepted: Duvets, pillows, cushions, soft toys or bric a brac. All money raised goes towards the Playground Insurance.

BOYLE GOLF CLUB Spring League
The PD Golf sponsored Spring League continued this  last week with overnight frost delaying action on Sunday 7th February for the second week running. Beginning with the first group the biggest movers were Peggy Feely and Kevin O'Connor who had a 5 hole win over their opponents which leaves them in second place behind Shane Loftus & Regina McLoughlin. In group two, Paul Connolly & Seth Meredith now lead the way after having overtaken Jim Dwyer & Tommy King who now lie in second position. Moving to group three, Vincent Egan and Lewis Shaw remain in poll position despite taking a break this week! Pat Conroy & Susan O'Mahoney stay in second place but have closed the gap to two holes. In the fourth group, pairs five and six, namely Michael Rush/Gerry O'Hara and Paddy McLoughlin/Mandy Toolan are currently jostling for the top spot with the former holding the upper hand by one hole.
