TRAD MUSIC

Martin Donohue with Sean O Se and the Nyahs.  Fleadh Fever spills over into Roscommon when singer Sean O Se, “An Po car Buile” song fame and accordionist Martin Donohoe “The Cavanman” join forces with Nyam guests Seamus Fay Lilter and the Donohoe Family. SUMMER READING BUZZ

Following the great success of the first two years of the summer reading challenge, the Boyle Library have joined up with a number of other local authorities to offer children the opportunity of taking part in the 2015 Summer Reading Buzz. The challenge will take place through the months of July and August. Children will register for the challenge and receive a loyalty card, and a small gift. With every book the child reads they will have their card stamped and once they have read six books they will receive a small prize, and on completing the challenge by reading ten books they will receive further prizes. When the child has completed the challenge and filled in their card (ten stamps = ten library books read) they will also receive a certificate at the end of the summer. Registration cards are available in the Boyle Library.

The Michael Coleman Story

This year is the 70^th Anniversary of the death in New York of Michael Coleman, that renowned fiddle player from Knockgrania who emigrated to America one hundred and one years ago.  To fittingly mark these anniversaries, the weekly summer sessions in the Coleman Music Centre tells the story of Michael Coleman. (1891-1945) Michael Coleman himself, very well portrayed by Eamon McCoy resonates his life story. Show runs each Wednesday during August at 9pm. Booking at 0719182599 or www.colemanirishmusic.com

Summer soccer camp at Boyle Celtic

The FAI Summer Soccer Camp is coming to Boyle this August. 5 days of top quality coaching will take place in Celtic Park, Boyle from August 10th to the 14th 2015. Camps are open to boys and girls aged between 6 and 14. They run from 10.30am until 3pm Monday to Friday. BOYLE CAMERA CLUB

Founded in 2007, Boyle Camera Club is one of the most active and innovative clubs west of the Shannon and were the Irish Photographic Federation National Shield Winners in 2013. Members have attained citations and numerous national awards for their work in recent years. Open to new members from beginners to advanced and meet the second Tuesday of each month at St. Joseph's Resource Centre in Boyle. Saturday 25^th July the Arts Festival Open was won by John McGuinn (40pts), 2nd Paddy McLoughlin (40pts), Gross Owen Garvin, 3rd Michael Simon (39pts) Thanks to all who took part and thanks to the Arts Festival Committee for holding the event. WALKING ON RIPPLES 

This is the latest entry in the well-stocked category of fishing books in the great literary or 'romantic fishing' tradition. It's reflective, speculative and full of allegory, memory and metaphor. Making ‘Walking on Ripples’ different, however, is the fact that chapters are a mix of both fiction and non-fiction, and are unified by this great watery theme running throughout. Everything is linked, the real and the imagined. It's an evocative (and sometimes dark) sideways look at the world down the length of a fishing rod, with a frequent touch of humour thrown in. David Murphy was born in Cork but has lived north of Dublin for many years. This is his first work featuring non-fiction. PATRICK RAFTER PLAYS VIOLIN

Regarded as one of Ireland’s most promising young musicians, Patrick has toured Europe, Asia and America as Concert Violinist, Chamber and Orchestral musician. Born into a musical family, Patrick received a full scholarship to the Royal Irish Academy of Music where he commenced studies with Eyal Kless. Patrick studied with Fionnuala Hunt for 5 years at RIAM. During his time with Fionnuala, he was the winner of all 3 senior competitions at the Feis Ceoil in Ireland aged just 17. NORTH WEST CURATORS IN CONVERSATION

Photographer and film maker Darren Purcell moved to Boyle in 2013 and was quickly bowled over by the beauty of the town and the warm, welcoming nature of its people.

These hidden gardens, large/small and in some wonderful settings which offer inspiration, ideas and tranquillity – a perfect day out.  One such garden belongs to Saffron Thomas and Ian Stanley. The garden which has been created by two artists in an intimate rural setting combine’s productivity, ornamental planting and permaculture. The garden opens to view from 11am until 5pm on Sunday 2nd August and 6th September. The garden can be found on the Boyle /Frenchpark Road, turn right at the Saddlers Inn, after approx 2.5km keep right on the bend, take 2nd lane on right and entrance just after first cottage.

The nationally renowned Boyle Arts Festival will launch on Thursday 23th July and open fully on Friday July 24th continuing until Saturday August 1st. The programme is already bursting at the seams with an eclectic mix of visual arts, music, drama, film, free family events, craft workshops, storytelling, readings and much more and is now in circulation around the town. An evening of storytelling, history and beer tasting from sisters Susan Boyle (creator of “A Wine Goose Chase”) and Judith Boyle (MSc Chemistry and Beer Sommelier). In this enjoyable and enlightening event, specially created for Boyle Arts Festival, Susan and Judith will lead you through a taste filled journey discovering the stories behind some of the world’s most loved beers and delving into some of Ireland’s most intriguing craft brews.

GALLIPOLI 1915

Oliver Fallon is a native of Boyle, Co Roscommon and one of the founder members of the New Connaught Rangers Association, founded in 2002. He has contributed to numerous TV and radio documentaries and publications. He has carried out extensive research on the history of the Connaught Rangers and their campaigns and will talk on the ill-fated Gallipoli campaign which cost the lives of so many, including many Irishmen, 100 years ago. Friday 24th July at 6pm in King House doors open at 5.30

THE MATCHMAKER

Starring television favourite Mary McEvoy and actor and comedian Jon Kenny, The Matchmaker is based on the novella “Letters of a County Matchmaker” by John B. Keane, one of Ireland’s most celebrated writers. The play follows the efforts of Dicky Mick Dicky O Connor to make matches for the lonely and lovelorn from all parts of the country. At the centre of this celebrated production is John B Keane’s marvellous and mischievous wit coupled by his unparalleled way with words. John B. Keane takes us back to a simpler time, when even phones were few and far between and the only web was one left behind by spiders. The show is directed by Michael Scott and not suitable for audiences under 16 years. Taking place in St Josephs Hall on Saturday 25^th July, this is one not to be missed.

Honda 50 Run

The Honda 50 run for all size bikes will be taking place on Sunday July 26th, meeting at Tawnytaskin Community Centre, Boyle Co. Roscommon. Entries are been taken from 10:30 am with refreshments being served all morning. Bikes are scheduled to leave at 12:30 for the round trip, returning 3:30- 4:00, a meal will be served afterwards with a raffle. RIVER CLEAN UP

Boyle and District Angling club are having their annual Boyle River clean up on Thursday 16^th July meeting at the bridge at 7pm. All help will be appreciated. Don’t forget to bring rakes, forks and gloves.

CURLEW WALKERS CLUB

The next meeting of the walkers club will take place from Richmond Harbour, Tarmonbarry at 9am on Saturday 18^th July  through to Monday 20^th July this being a three day event  but walkers are free to join for one or two days. The walk which will be following the Royal Canal is a climb and a grade 3 with your leaders being Philip James on 086 3353 000 and Denise O’Dowd on 086 2342 999. FAREWELL FR BRIAN

A number of celebratory events for the contribution to the area by Fr. Brian Conlon will take place locally in the coming weeks. Fr Brian is due to undertake further studies in hospital chaplaincy from the end of July. On Saturday 18th, Fr Brian will be honoured in Drumboylan Community Centre at 9.30pm. In Boyle, an evening of celebration will take place on Friday 24th July commencing at 7.30pm in the Family Life Centre. On Saturday 25th, the celebrations continue in Crossna Parish House following 8.30pm Mass. Fr Brian’s final local Masses will take place in Drumboylan and Cootehall on Sunday 26th.

Later that evening a grand farewell party will take place in a marquee adjacent to Cootehall Church at 8pm

Honda 50 Run

The Honda 50 run for all size bikes will be taking place on Sunday July 26th, meeting at Tawnytaskin Community Centre, Boyle Co. Roscommon. Entries are been taken from 10:30 am with refreshments being served all morning. Bikes are scheduled to leave at 12:30 for the round trip, returning 3:30- 4:00, a meal will be served afterwards with a raffle. The Paddy Sharkey Memorial Perpetual Lough Gara Cup Open Pike Angling Competition (boat fishing) will take place on Sunday 26th July. Fishing from 11am until 6pm. Summer soccer camp at Boyle Celtic

The FAI Summer Soccer Camp is coming to Boyle this August. 5 days of top quality coaching will take place in Celtic Park, Boyle from August 10th to the 14th 2015. Camps are open to boys and girls aged between 6 and 14. They run from 10.30am until 3pm Monday to Friday. Congratulations to Peggy Feely who won Sandra McCrann’s Lady Captain’s Prize on Sunday 5^th July. Ruth Hogg was a close 2nd, Liz Dwyer won the gross and Regina McLoughlin was 3rd. At the presentation Lady Captain Sandra thanked everyone for attending and welcomed the Captain Michael Rush, Lady President Liz Dwyer & Mens President Charlie O’Donnell. The Ladies Captains Prize to the men was won by Dave Purser 41pts, 2nd Eamon Perry 40pts, Gross Patrick Egan, 3rd John McGuinn 39pts. Lady Captains Scramble was won by Sean Heslin, Marie Hanmore-Cawley & Sean McLoughlin, 2nd Michael Reid, Mary McKeon & Paula Cull, 3rd Patrick Egan, Dave Purser & Bridie Beirne. In Inter Club matches well done to our Cecil Ewing Team who had a great win against Rosses Point last Friday. Junior lessons also continue on Saturday mornings at 11.00

BOYLE ARTS FESTVAL

The nationally renowned Boyle Arts Festival will launch on Thursday 23th July and open fully on Friday July 24th continuing until Saturday August 1st. The programme is already bursting at the seams with an eclectic mix of visual arts, music, drama, film, free family events, craft workshops, storytelling, readings and much more and will be in circulation around the town very soon. Booking is advisable for all events and this can be done at the Festival office, next door to Marian’s, Bridge St. Boyle. SHUTTLE BUS       

The Lough Key/Boyle Shuttle Bus is up and  running 6 days a week three times a day, Monday through to Saturday for the months of July and August. The fare is only €1 per adult and under 16’s for 50 cent. Departing from the Crescent at 10.30am 2.30pm and 6.30pm, from Military Road at 10.40am 2.40 and 6.40pm and from Lough Key Visitor Centre at 11am 3pm and 7pm. Boyle Town and More are confident the shuttle bus will attract many of the 100,000 visitors to Lough Key to visit our town again this year.

KING HOUSE EVENT

SECRET GARDENS

These hidden gardens, large/small and in some wonderful settings which offer inspiration, ideas and tranquillity – a perfect day out.  One such garden belongs to Saffron Thomas and Ian Stanley. The garden which has been created by two artists in an intimate rural setting combine’s productivity, ornamental planting and permaculture. The garden opens to view from 11am until 5pm on Sunday 12^th / 26^th July 2nd August and 6^th September. The garden can be found on the Boyle /Frenchpark Road, turn right at the Saddlers Inn, after approx 2.5km keep right on the bend, take 2^nd lane on right and entrance just after first cottage.

TALES OF ALES

An evening of storytelling, history and beer tasting from sisters Susan Boyle (creator of “A Wine Goose Chase”) and Judith Boyle (MSc Chemistry and Beer Sommelier). GALLIPOLI 1915

Oliver Fallon is a native of Boyle, Co Roscommon and one of the founder members of the New Connaught Rangers Association, founded in 2002. He has contributed to numerous TV and radio documentaries and publications. He has carried out extensive research on the history of the Connaught Rangers and their campaigns and will talk on the ill-fated Gallipoli campaign which cost the lives of so many, including many Irishmen, 100 years ago. Thursday 25^th June night’s Mens Competition was won by Shane O’Dowd 31pts, 2nd Vincent Egan 26pts, and 3rd Ross Andrew 25pts. Friday 26^th June saw the Scramble won by Patrick Conroy, Criona O’Donnell & Tom Kearney, 2nd Cillian Doyle, Susan O’Mahoney & Marie Gallagher. Congratulations to Jonathan Egan & Seamus Gallagher who won the foursomes final last Wednesday 24^th June. Commiserations went to beaten finalists Charlie O’Donnell &Ted Hestor. Open week commenced on Monday July 6th will be a Ladies and Gents nine hole. Tuesday is Ladies Day, format 18 hole stableford.  Open week will run up until Sunday 12^th July.
