Boyle Community Notes Week beginning 1st September (Week 35)

Post Leaving Cert Courses
Abbey Community College are now taking applications for their FETAC Level 5 Certificate in Business Studies. Application forms can be downloaded from www.abbeycc.ie or by calling to the school reception. The course commences on Tuesday 8th September. The course is suitable for students who have recently completed their Leaving Certificate or those who wish to return to the workplace. Grants are available for students. Man. Utd supporters club meeting
The Manchester United Supporters Club county Roscommon branch will hold a Membership Meeting on Thursday September 10th. It will commence at 9.30pm in The Patrick’s Well, Boyle. New Members are welcome. This is the final opportunity this season to register through your local branch.

Lough Key Tri
The annual Lough Key Sprint Triathlon will take place this year on Sunday September 6th. One of the final races of the this year’s Vodafone National Series the sprint distance event has a 750m swim over to the scenic Castle Island and back, a 23km bike leg around the lake followed by a 5km run through the new and improved park paths. Lough Key has consistently proved to be one of the more popular Triathlon events on the calendar and has always managed to attract a quality field with names such as Gavin Noble, Kevin Thornton, Jennifer O’Connell and Laura Tighe topping the results in recent years.
This year’s event is sponsored once again by Waterways Ireland and in addition to our substantial prize pot and well renowned goodie bags we have impressive trophies for the fastest male and female bike splits. New to Lough Key this year will be two new perpetual trophies for the fastest swim splits in memory of club member John Cloughley who passed away earlier this year. Having seen the almost finished trophies we can guarantee that these will be well sought after trophies for years to come! So whether you are a top class triathlete bidding to get your name on one of our high quality bespoke marble trophies for posterity or a beginner looking for a great venue and friendly welcome come to Lough Key on Sunday 6th for a great day’s racing. Cannonball Run in the Boyle area
Car enthusiasts are in for treat in Boyle on Friday September 11th when the seventh Cannonball Run travels past the town on the N4. The three day Cannonball Run is the largest organised road trip in Europe and the most exciting motoring and social event of the year. The trip typically features 170 cars including the world’s top makes: McLaren, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Porsche, Masseratti, Rolls Royce and Bentley. Cannonball Ireland has raised over 700,000 euro for Irish Children Charities. This year, Make A Wish Ireland will be Cannonball Ireland charity. It is a spectacle to behold as the cars and their colourful drivers make their way around Ireland. Friday 11th will see the cars travel from Dublin to Sligo. Further details on www.cannonball.ie

BOYLE & DISTRICT ANGLING CLUB
Fishing for the Martin Mitchell Charity Cup will be taking place on Lough Key on Sunday 13th September from 11am until 5pm. This is a Boat Competition with all entry fees being passed onto a charity, plus the club contribution.

Opportunities galore
Roscommon Learning Links Boyle run full Time Level 4 and Level 5 Major Awards in Information Technology from their Training Rooms in Elphin Steet. These are Local Training Initiatives funded by the GRETB-Galway Roscommon Education and Training Programmes. All Courses offer QQI Certification allowing students’ progress to further Education if they wish, or gain certification in Office Applications –an essential requirement for all most all administrative type roles. While Siobhan Gallagher –Centre Co-ordinator has acknowledged the difficulty over the last number of years for students gaining employment, both she and Martina have seen a marked increase in progression since January 2015. 18 students have finished their Training since April 2015 almost 60% of those have opted to go to University or Further Education to achieve Higher Certificates at Level 6 or Degree Programmes while 35% have taken up full-time employment. Their jobs include Tourism, Services Sector, Hospitality, Auctioneering and Construction. Anyone who is currently unemployed and in receipt of a Social Welfare payment can be waitlisted for these Courses. They Run Full-time Monday to Thursday with a half day on Friday. Anyone who is at a crossroads trying to decide where to next could do worse than pop in to Roscommon Learning Links to chat further about the Training Courses available. To anyone who may be disappointed with Leaving Results and in a quandary about what to do, once they are registered with social Welfare they too can join the programme where up to 400 points can be achieved on a Level Programme. Healthcare Modules are also being ran from the Centre commencing September 2015, and are advised, if interested to attend a GRETB Information evening in the Abbey Hotel Roscommon on Tuesday 1st September at 7pm, while if it’s Childcare you might be interested in, an Information session is being held in Hannons Hotel Roscommon on Thursday 3rd September at 8pm. A series of Computer Benefit Classes have just been completed at the Centre funded by Irish Rural Links where 20 participants have gained tuition and skill in Internet & Email. These classes were free and offered to those with little or no IT knowledge. It is hoped that these classes will be offered again in the Autumn. The Job Club are also scheduling a 4 week Programme running from the Centre (mornings only) so it’s all go at Roscommon Learning Links and the place to be this Autumn.

On Sunday 23rd August the 18 hole was cancelled due to bad weather and will be re-arranged. Thursday 20th August saw the night competition won by Lorcan Egan 19pts, 2nd Charlie O’Donnell 18pts, and 3rd Jonathan Egan 18pts. Friday 21st saw the  Scramble won by Patrick Egan, Susan O’Mahoney, Paddy McLoughlin & Lewis Shaw, 2nd Brendan Gaffney, Gerry O’Hara & Peter Leydon, 3rd Michael Reid, Eithne Gaffney & Cillian Doyle. Saturday 22nd August “Last Man Standing” was won by John McGuinn (20th), 2nd Cillian Doyle (19th), 3rd Cian Smith (19th. “Last Lady Standing was won by Sandra McCrann (17th), 2nd Moira Egan (17th). Well done to Niall Kearney who won his King Harmon semi-final against Seamus Gallagher and is through to the final against Lionel Lynn. The Captains Prize to the juniors was won by Ciara Rooney and Seth Meredith. ROSCOMMON REMEMBERS
Whet your appetite for the Decade of Commemorations and Ireland 1916:2016 a time of commemoration, conversation and exploration- by listening to tales of that era in Roscommon from people who lived through those times or whose families passed on their stories from one generation to next. Listen to interviews collected by the County Roscommon Folklore & Oral History Network – hear stories of life in Roscommon during times of the Troubles, the Black and Tans and Scramogue Ambush and much more. All this is taking place throughout Heritage Week at Boyle Library during opening hours.

HERITAGE WEEK IN KING HOUSE
Life size historical figures, interactive displays and activities bring the past 300 years to life on Tuesday 25th / Wednesday 26th / Thursday 27th / Friday 28th and Saturday 29th  August. Free admission for children who are accompanied by an adult.

FeelyStone
Discover 235 Years of Industrial Heritage & Design at Feelystone Boyle. FeelyStone Boyle are delighted to announce details of events as part of National Heritage Week on Friday 28th & Saturday 29th August from 2pm until 6pm. The event will launch at 2pm on Friday 28th with the cutting of a cake to celebrate the family’s 235 years in the stone industry. All are welcome over the two afternoons for refreshments and a variety of events including: Guided tours of the factory and showrooms; Stonecutting demonstrations; Visit the museum; and a Reading at 5pm by Barry Feely from his recent book ‘A Life in Stone’. Children can take part in colouring activities to create their own kitchen and young people may be interested to view a demonstration of the company’s design process on CAD (Computer Aided Design) on Friday afternoon. Finbarr Feely and his brother Shane are the 10th generation of the Feely family in the Boyle business working alongside an expert management and production team. Boyle Musical Society
While it may not seem like it just yet, the evenings will soon be drawing in around us, meaning it’s time to think about what to do for the autumn….. You could, of course, do worse than take up evening classes for basket weaving, a foreign language or fishing rod maintenance. Or you could stay at home and rearrange your sock drawer! However, the best fun to be had this autumn will be taking part in Boyle Musical Society’s forthcoming production of the well known fantasy musical extravaganza, The Wizard of Oz which will be staged from November 18th to 22nd. Rehearsals will begin on Monday August 31st in St. Joseph’s Hall, Boyle at 8pm and a warm welcome is extended to all new, former and existing members to join up for twelve unforgettable weeks of music, singing, drama, dancing, comedy and lots more…. Rehearsals will continue in the Hall at 8pm on Thursday September 3rd and thereafter on Monday and Thursday nights. Musical Director Anne and Director/Choreographer, Vivienne will be on hand to outline the show to everybody, so come along and join the fun. It is hoped to have the principal parts in the show cast by mid September, so we are really expecting a big turnout at the first rehearsal. We will be looking for children, aged 8 to 12 to take part in the show and we will hold a workshop/audition, specifically for them, on Sunday September 20th at 3pm. More details later. Everybody will be familiar with the 1939 film production of The Wizard of Oz, in which Judy Garland played the part of Dorothy, the young girl from Kansas who dreams of faraway places. The show features well-known songs like, ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’, ‘We’re Off To See The Wizard’, ‘Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead’, and ‘The Merry Old Land Of Oz’. Plans are already underway to ensure that The Wizard of Oz will be Boyle Musical Society’s most spectacular and memorable show ever! So come along and join the fun on Monday August 31st. Boyle Musical Society will stage The Wizard of Oz from Wednesday November 18th until Sunday November 22nd in St. Joseph’s Hall, Boyle. Thursday 13th August saw the 12 hole competition won by Seamus Gallagher with an excellent score of 31pts, 2nd Lionel Lynn 29pts, 3rd Jonathan Egan 28pts. Friday's Scramble was won by Charlie O'Donnell, Pat Conroy, Lewis Shaw & Susan O'Mahoney. The club outing has been fixed for Saturday October 3rd at Portumna Golf Club. The first tee-time will be at 10.30am. Please put your name on the club noticeboard if you wish to attend. In King Harmon news, Lionel Lynn has progressed to the final after defeating Willie Tiernan. He awaits the winner of the other semi final between Seamus Gallagher and Niall Kearney.

Boyle Community Notes Week beginning 18th August (Week 33)


SUMMER READING BUZZ
Following the great success of the first two years of the summer reading challenge, the Boyle Library have joined up with a number of other local authorities to offer children the opportunity of taking part in the 2015 Summer Reading Buzz. The challenge will take place through the month of August. Children will register for the challenge and receive a loyalty card, and a small gift. With every book the child reads they will have their card stamped and once they have read six books they will receive a small prize, and on completing the challenge by reading ten books they will receive further prizes. When the child has completed the challenge and filled in their card (ten stamps = ten library books read) they will also receive a certificate at the end of the summer. Registration cards are available in the Boyle Library.

Colour Run event for Forest Park
Roscommon Colour Run is a fantastic ‘crawl, walk, or run’, colour event suitable for all ages and abilities. It will take place in Lough Key Forest Park, Boyle on Sunday 21st August. Not so much about speed or endurance and more about having the time of your life, The Roscommon ColourRun is a family fun event in which participants of all ages from 1 to 100 years are covered from head to toe in different colours as they make their way through the beautiful grounds of Lough Key Forest Park. The fun continues at the finish line with a gigantic “Color celebration,” using more coloured powder to create happiness and lasting memories, not to mention millions of vivid colour combinations.
With only two rules, the idea is easy to follow: 1. Wear white at the starting line 2. Finish plastered in colour

BOYLE HORSE SUMMER SHOW
The Boyle Horse and Summer Show will take place on Sunday 23rd August at its new location at the top of Green Street between the Church of Ireland and Green Street Veterinary Clinic. Show programs are available in UnaBhan and throughout the town.
Show entries must be delivered to the Marquee between 9am – 12noon on Sunday 23rd August. You can also leave in your completed entry forms and entry fees to UnaBhan from Monday 17th August to avoid the queues on the day. Hope to see you there!

The Michael Coleman Story
This year is the 70th Anniversary of the death in New York of Michael Coleman, that renowned fiddle player from Knockgrania who emigrated to America one hundred and one years ago.  To fittingly mark these anniversaries, the weekly summer sessions in the Coleman Music Centre tells the story of Michael Coleman. FeelyStone
A Celebration of 235 years in the Stone Industry will take place on Friday 28th August from 2pm until 6pm beginning with a tour of Feelystone Factory, Greatmeadow, Boyle with stone cutting demonstrations (Celtic Crosses and Contemporary Designs), talks and readings, FeelyStone Heritage and Tradition Exhibition with children’s activities.

Water Safety Programme 2015
Irish Water Safety programme 2015 is up and running until Friday 14th August and the following week, Monday 17th Tuesday 18th August. Participants should be between 7 and 13 years old. Fee €50 including bus to and from Roscommon Swimming Pool. Bus will leave from behind St. Joseph's Hall. For further information please call Maureen on 086 388 9907.

TRIBUTE TO A GENTLEMAN
A tribute will be paid to Peter Walsh, boat man of Lough Key on Saturday 15th August on Trinity Island at 5.30pm. Any boat owners who would like to attend please meet at the Lough Key Marina for 5pm.

Colour Run event for Forest Park
Roscommon Colour Run is a fantastic ‘crawl, walk, or run’, colour event suitable for all ages and abilities. It will take place in Lough Key Forest Park, Boyle on Sunday 21st August. Not so much about speed or endurance and more about having the time of your life, The Roscommon ColourRun is a family fun event in which participants of all ages from 1 to 100 years are covered from head to toe in different colours as they make their way through the beautiful grounds of Lough Key Forest Park. The fun continues at the finish line with a gigantic “Color celebration,” using more coloured powder to create happiness and lasting memories, not to mention millions of vivid colour combinations.
With only two rules, the idea is easy to follow: 1. Wear white at the starting line 2. Finish plastered in colour

CELEBRATE NATIONAL HERITAGE WEEK
National Heritage Week will take place between the 22nd and 30th of August this year to shine a light on Ireland’s Industrial and Design Heritage. Heritage Week is a celebration of our local heritage and the joy and pride the Roscommon people have for their heritage. I’d like to say thanks to all the people and groups who have taken the time to plan events for Heritage Week and wish them every success with their events. Over twenty five community groups, organisations and individuals have organised over sixty events around Co. Roscommon to celebrate the rich and diverse heritage that is there for us all to enjoy in the county. Events are taking place from the north to the very south of the county, so no matter where you live there should be a Heritage Week event on near you! There are lots to do for all ages and all the family during National Heritage Week and best of all most of it is free, so enjoy the week! BOYLE HORSE SUMMER SHOW
It’s hard to believe that the Boyle Horse and Summer Show has been running
for three years. Going from strength to strength we are sure that 2015 will be as enjoyable as the last 2 years. There are lots of new craft sections to enter this year, metal work,
stone craft and wood turning, junk couture and loom band making. We would like
to thank all those who help with the fundraising, who volunteer on the day and
who bake, make, sow and sew, making this a wonderful community event.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Quinn and Brennan families,
along with the residents of Deerpark for allowing the show to be hosted at this venue.
To all of you who have helped, who want to help and who as yet don’t realize but will help – thank you! Horse jumping starts at 9:30am on Sunday 23rd August.

AIRPORT BUS
We have been notified by Marie Paul of the group Making Boyle a Safer Place for the Older People that after lobbying Bus Eireann Boyle is being added as a set down only stop in the 23.00hrs service ex Dublin to Sligo. An implementation date of Sunday 30th August 2015 has been set for the introduction of the above change.

Lough Key Tri
The annual Lough Key Sprint Triathlon will take place this year on Sunday September 6th. One of the final races of the this year’s Vodafone National Series the sprint distance event has a 750m swim over to the scenic Castle Island and back, a 23km bike leg around the lake followed by a 5km run through the new and improved park paths. Lough Key has consistently proved to be one of the more popular Triathlon events on the calendar and has always managed to attract a quality field with names such as Gavin Noble, Kevin Thornton, Jennifer O’Connell and Laura Tighe topping the results in recent years.
This year’s event is sponsored once again by Waterways Ireland and in addition to our substantial prize pot and well renowned goodie bags we have impressive trophies for the fastest male and female bike splits. New to Lough Key this year will be two new perpetual trophies for the fastest swim splits in memory of club member John Cloughley who passed away earlier this year. Having seen the almost finished trophies we can guarantee that these will be well sought after trophies for years to come! So whether you are a top class triathlete bidding to get your name on one of our high quality bespoke marble trophies for posterity or a beginner looking for a great venue and friendly welcome come to Lough Key on Sunday 6th for a great day’s racing. Entry is strictly limited to 500 on the day so make sure to get your entry in early. SUMMER READING BUZZ
Following the great success of the first two years of the summer reading challenge, the Boyle Library have joined up with a number of other local authorities to offer children the opportunity of taking part in the 2015 Summer Reading Buzz. The challenge will take place through the month of August. Children will register for the challenge and receive a loyalty card, and a small gift. With every book the child reads they will have their card stamped and once they have read six books they will receive a small prize, and on completing the challenge by reading ten books they will receive further prizes. When the child has completed the challenge and filled in their card (ten stamps = ten library books read) they will also receive a certificate at the end of the summer. Registration cards are available in the Boyle Library.

The Michael Coleman Story
This year is the 70th Anniversary of the death in New York of Michael Coleman, that renowned fiddle player from Knockgrania who emigrated to America one hundred and one years ago.  To fittingly mark these anniversaries, the weekly summer sessions in the Coleman Music Centre tells the story of Michael Coleman. (1891-1945) Michael Coleman himself, very well portrayed by Eamon McCoy resonates his life story. Show runs each Wednesday during August at 9pm. Booking at 0719182599 or www.colemanirishmusic.com

Cannonball Run in the Boyle area
Car enthusiasts are in for treat in Boyle on Friday September 11th when the seventh Cannonball Run travels past the town on the N4. The three day Cannonball Run is the largest organised road trip in Europe and the most exciting motoring and social event of the year. The trip typically features 170 cars including the world’s top makes: McLaren, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Porsche, Masseratti, Rolls Royce and Bentley. Cannonball Ireland has raised over 700,000 euro for Irish Children Charities. This year, Make A Wish Ireland will be Cannonball Ireland charity. It is a spectacle to behold as the cars and their colourful drivers make their way around Ireland. Friday 11th will see the cars travel from Dublin to Sligo. Further details on www.cannonball.ie

Well done to Brendan Gaffney who won the Captains Prize last Sunday 2nd August with a score of 100 over 27 holes. In an exciting finish the win was secured when Willie Tiernan's final putt lipped the hole and a relieved Brendan won his first Captains Prize.
