  Boyle Community Notes Week beginning 29th November (Week 48)

CHILDRENS CHRISTMAS ART
All Primary School children in Boyle and surrounding schools are invited to draw or paint a picture with a Christmas in Boyle theme. The only criteria are that it be A4 size with the Childs Name, School and Childs Age on the back of the drawing. Winners will be selected and schools notified on Friday 2nd December. Santa will present the winners with their prizes and the winners will join him on his new sleigh and assist him in turning on the Christmas lights for 2016 in Boyle. Entries must be dropped in or posted to: Brian Kelly, Better Buy/Surprises, The Crescent, Boyle on or before Wednesday 30th November. This year in addition to our spectacular lights and feature pieces we also have a new addition – a Giant Christmas Tree (which will be erected on the Crescent over the coming days) and which was very kindly donated to the Town by Ardcarne Garden Centre. The tree will be lit thanks to the community supporting our Mega Draw offering €2000 in Cash prizes. Don’t miss the chance to be one of the lucky winners. Lines are available in all Businesses throughout the town.

TOWN AWARDS
The judging of Boyle's entry in the Bank of Ireland Enterprise Town awards will take place on Wednesday 30th November.Three independent judges will visit the town on the day and meet with the applicants - Boyle Town Team and Boyle Chamber of Commerce - along with members of the community.After a welcoming address they will be brought on an 80 minute tour of the town to see the various enterprises and locations referred to in the application.Marks in the competition will be awarded on innovation, leadership, sustainability, partnership, social inclusion, pro activity and a sense of energy. The county winners, who can use the title "Roscommon's Most Enterprising Town" will be announced at an event in the Abbey Hotel, Roscommon on 7th December. The national winner will also be announced on the night. Chairman of Boyle Town Team Brian Nerney paid credit to the Team members who have been working tirelessly on this project for the last few weeks. He said the winning of the award would be a brilliant marketing tool for the town and a positive endorsement of the work been undertaken by so many at present and in previous years. seminar in King House
A seminar titled Radical Actions will take place in King House on Friday December 2nd commencing at 11am. Curated by Boyle resident Linda Shevlin, Radical Actions is a three part international commemoration project. It takes the form of an exhibition of Irish artists Kennedy Browne (Gareth Kennedy/Sarah Browne), Duncan Campbell, Jesse Jones & Seamus Nolan at RMIT Galleries, Melbourne Australia; the exhibition Bernadette by Duncan Campbell at Roscommon Arts Centre and the final instalment will take the form of a seminar in the historic setting of King House, Boyle. This seminar will look at the legacy of revolution & activism in Ireland and the artists’ role in shaping future states with speakers including Professor Luke Gibbons, artists Sarah Browne, Jesse Jones, Gareth Kennedy & Seamus Nolan, film maker Treasa O’Brien and photojournalist/videographer Paula Geraghty.

Curlew Walkers Club

A Celebration of Roscommons Musical Heritage will take place on Saturday December 3rd in St. Joseph’s Hall, Boyle. The rich cultural heritage of County Roscommon will be celebrated with a night of Traditional Music, Song and Dance performed by some of the finest musicians, singers and dancers from around the county. The Master of Ceremonies for the evening will be the legendary Martin Donohoe presenter of Shannonside and Northern Sounds popular radio show ‘The Wind That Blows’. The Irish Traditional Music Archive will be present to record this special night.

Arts Crafts & Pre-Loved Gift Sale
Sale will take place on Saturday 3rd December in Crossna Community Centre, Boyle from 12 until 3pm and Free Entry. Pitch set-up strictly 9am until 11am only. Previous stalls have included food, arts, cards, decorations, crafts, jewellery, collectables & other unique gift ideas as well as quality bric-a-brac.


DEAR SANTa
Have you got a little someone who would like to receive a personal letter from the man in red himself this December?  Una Bhan Craft Shop has established a direct line to Santa Claus and has arranged for him to reply to children's letters. Your child can write their letter to Santa and post it in the ‘Special Santa Box’ in the Una Bhan Craft Shop, €5 per child (to cover admin charges - no stamp required!), then leave the rest to us.  Make sure your child includes their full name, address, age and special requests for Christmas and include a mention of any brothers, sisters or special friends so the reply can be really personal. We will make sure that Santa gets to read each letter and write a personal letter back, which will be posted directly to the child. Santa’s Letter Service will up until Friday 17th December.

BOYLE GOLF Club Results
On Sunday'19th November the turkey voucher 9 hole competition went ahead as scheduled with the cold conditions not deterring those players who took to the fairways of Boyle Golf Club. First prize went to Michael Reid (16) 23pts, in second was Michael Simon (15) 21pts, while Lorcan Egan (9) took third on a countback with 20pts. Last week's Winter Open competition fell foul of the weather. The annual handicap review took place in the clubhouse on Sunday evening. Updates to relevant handicaps will be posted to the club noticeboard in the upcoming days along with the golfers being contacted directly.

COURTYARD MARKET
The Market is open from 10am to 2pm each and every Saturday in the grounds of King House, Boyle. If you would like to enjoy the best locally grown fresh and organic produce, then a trip to Boyle Courtyard Market on Saturday should be on your agenda. There is a wide range of seasonal produce, including organic fruit and vegetables, homemade jams and marmalade, organic free range eggs, fruit juices, gluten free/ sour dough/ spelt bread and all kinds of delicious home bakes are available every week. Alongside the food stalls are a number of crafters selling their handmade wares, personalized candles and knitwear. On Wednesday November 23rd Úna Bhán Tourism will hold a Fun Table Quiz Night in Clarke's Bar, Boyle, at 9pm (sharp)! Úna Bhán Tourism provides on-going support to tourism businesses through marketing and promotion and welcomes you to come along, have fun and support the night with your own team Úna Bhán Tourism Cooperative is supported by the Department of Social Protection and Pobal through the Community Services Programme and mainly involved in the development and marketing of community based rural tourism in County Roscommon. Galilee Community 
Advent Retreat in Galilee Community on Saturday November 26th. The presenter will be Fr. Jim Noonan ODC. The theme will be “Mary model for Advent, Woman of courage, tenderness and Pathfinder.” Day will begin at 10:30 am and conclude with Mass at 4pm. A light lunch of soup and brown bread will be served.

This concert will be a historic and unique event, the first such official occasion where this rich array of performers will be brought together in one place and for one night only. Performers include a mix of the counties internationally recognised musicians Cathy Jordan of Dervis fame, Alan Kelly and John Carty, as well as national treasures such as Paddy Ryan, John Wynne, Patsy Hanly, Tommy Guihan, John Carlos, Francis Gaffney, The Moylurg Ceili Band, The South Roscommon Singers and many more.

OPENING SOON
Senator Frank Feighan has confirmed that the N61 stretch of road near Boyle currently subject to major safety works will reopen to the public on Monday December 12th. “The reopening of the road to the public on December 12th will bring to an end the diversion currently in place and of course that will mean very good news for many affected motorists.

Boyle Christmas lights
With a little over six weeks until Christmas and four weeks until the annual Boyle Christmas Fair, thoughts turn to the erection of the town’s Christmas lights. Following a meeting on Wednesday night it was agreed to have the lights erected over three evenings next week – Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Meeting on the Crescent, work will commence from 7pm until 11pm. If you can assist on any of the three nights, please contact Stephen Bohan on 071 96 62552. The more people that help out – the easier the workload.

COURTYARD MARKET
The Market is open from 10am to 2pm each and every Saturday in the grounds of King House, Boyle. BOYLE GOLF Club Results
Sunday 13th November saw the second 8 hole turkey voucher competition which took  place with the standard of scoring being exceptionally high. In first place was Paul Connolly with 22pts whose card featured birdies on the index one second hole and also on the ninth. In second was Jim Dwyer with 21pts - an impressive score which normally would be enough for top spot while in third was Liam Whyte who had the best of the 20 points to beat two other players on the same score. The weekly winter open competition was won by Michael Rush with 19pts. The AGM of the parent club of Boyle Golf Club took place in the clubhouse last also on Sunday 13th November.  At the meeting, the Captain for 2016 Ross Andrew vacated the seat as chairperson and was filled by his successor Gerry O'Hara. The club wishes to thank Ross for serving as Captain over the past year with distinction and wishes Gerry the best of luck and success in the role for the upcoming year. The meeting also saw the stepping down of club treasurer Michael Gilmartin who served in this position for the past five years. The club is indebted to him for his great work to ensure the club's finances are in a healthy position and we wish to express sincere gratitude to Michael for this.

Day of Style
Marians of Boyle will hold a “Day of Style” on Saturday 19th November at their store in Boyle. Mandy Maher and ladies from Catwalk Modelling Agency will take part in the event. Marians of Boyle invited all to join them for mini fashion shows, styling tips etc.
Mini Fashion Shows will take place at 12noon, 2pm and 3.15pm

It was an 8 hole stableford which was won by Gary Carty with 17pts.  In second was Tommy King with 16pts, and third was Michael Rush also with 16pts. The weekly winter open competition was won by Sean Heslin with 19pts, with Seamus Gallagher in second on 18pts.

There are only six working weeks remaining until Christmas and the Boyle Christmas lights crew (who have worked tirelessly over the last 3 years fundraising for new lights for Boyle and organising erection of same) are appealing to all businesses in Boyle to attend a Christmas Lights meeting on Wednesday 9th November at 6.30pm in Boyle Enterprise Centre. Lights need to be erected over the coming weeks, and funding put in place to light same, so please give a half hour of your time to attend the meeting and be part of Lighting up Boyle this Christmas. We look forward to a representative from every business being there.

Tawnytaskin Centre
Community Mass will be taking place Friday 11th  November at Tawnytaskin Community Centre at 8pm. Everyone welcome and refreshments served afterwards.

African Fashion Week in Boyle
The Africa History Month Ireland is here again in the month of November as we celebrate African Caribbean in Diaspora here in Ireland. The African Fashion Week Ireland 2016 will kick start on the 12th November, 2016 in King House, Main Street Boyle. This year’s fashion week show will showcase the best of African Caribbean through fashion as powerful, focused, determined, thriving, stylish, modern and in control. The Designers at AFWI fashion showcase will include both emerging and established brands across ready-to-wear, accessories and footwear. The show will continue to build its platform as an authority in the fashion industry; the African Fashion Week Ireland will be attracting an audience of UK and international press and buyers at the King House, Boyle.

Curlew Walkers Club

BOYLE ICA
Interested locals in the ICA (Irish Countrywomen’s Association) are trying to reform a guild in Boyle. If anyone is interested please leave their name me or text Yvonne on 087 903 7326. Boyle golf club Results
Last weekend’s 8 hole competition was won by Jonathan Egan with 19pts. In second was Gerry Carty with 17pts and in third was Seamus Gallagher on the same score. The ladies prize was won by Tish Perry with 16pts.

COURTYARD MARKET
The Market is open from 10am to 2pm each and every Saturday in the grounds of King House, Boyle.
