Boyle Community Notes Week beginning 31st May (Week 22)

New Local Link bus service for Boyle
Local Bus Company McKennas of Boyle have been awarded the tender to run the new Local Link Route 570 Boyle Area Bus Service. It is understood the National Transport Authority funded service will initally include a three times daily “Lough Key Forest Park Ranger” link between Boyle and Lough Key Forest Park, with a further added late evening return service to the Park. This will operate seven days per week during the holiday season. The Lough Key Shuttle Bus, whose main sponsor was Boyletoday.com, operated this service on a pilot basis for the last two years. In addition, the new service will include five times daily around the town (the Boyle Round Town Services) to bring in Lowparks & Mockmoyne / Marian Road & Church View / Termon Road, Plunkett Home, Train Station and Silveroe (Frenchpark Road). There will be stops at Boyle Medical Centre, Post Office, Train Station, Supervalu, King House and Abbeyhaven among others. The fare structure is competitive with concessions for students and young children. The services are free for passengers holding Department of Social Protection Travel Passes. There will be an additional daily service, Monday to Sunday, linking Boyle Town with Roscommon Town / Hospital / Train Station which will include stops at Elphin Windmill, Strokestown Park House & Rathcroghan Centre in Tulsk. The service will be officially launched in King House on June 1st at 1.30pm. Bus time tables are now available and local outlets.

PRIMARY CARE CENTRE
Boyle is to get a new Primary Care Centre within the next two years. Work is expected to start from the end of this month. The aim of this and another 13 centres around the country will be to provide patients with a variety of health care services locally, eliminating the need for them to have to attend at hospitals.

SECRET GARDENS
Created by two artists in an intimate rural setting, this garden combines productivity, ornamental planting and permaculture. Winding grass paths lead to ponds, developing woodland and polytunnel, one jungle-themed, one for fruit and veg. With an eclectic mix of planting and sculpture, this 16 year old garden is still developing. Open11am until 5pm on, 19th June, 10th and 30th July, 21st August and 11 September. Boyle Men's Shed is running computer sessions at the Family Life Centre on Wednesday afternoons from 2.30pm until 4.30pm. Sessions are for those who would like to learn the basic understanding of computers, level 3 and below. Skype, Internet, email, Word are some of the apps covered. This course is open to men and women of any age. Some laptops are provided but you can bring your own laptop/tablet. Please phone the Centre on 0719663000 to book a slot.

Boyle Open Art Exhibition 2016
Attention all artists, local, new, those from further afield and those under 25 – it is time to be thinking of your entry to the Boyle Open Art Exhibition. The exhibition runs this year from Friday 22nd July until Saturday 30th July. We were delighted that last year’s exhibition was well supported again, as always. We anticipate another excellent show for 2016. Entries will be accepted in any medium, to a maximum of 3 per person. GET CERTIFIED IN IT MODULES
Places are now available at Roscommon Learning Links, Elphin St, Boyle to Upskill and get Certified in IT modules in addition to achieving a Major Award at Level 4 or 5.  Anyone who is currently signing on the live register is eligible. This might be an opportunity for anyone who has been made redundant to upskill while at the same time be seeking employment opportunities. Continuous intake on our courses which means one can start immediately. Training is going throughout the summer months. Over 80% of our students who have completed our Courses in the last year are now in employment or have progressed to 3rd Level Colleges. The training is funded by GRETB. BOYLE GOLF CLUB
Sunday 22nd May saw the Gents Competition won by Charlie O’Donnell (9) 39 pts, 2nd Michael Reid (16) 38 pts, Gross Gary Carty (6) 31 pts (gross score), & 3rd Pat Brogan (20) 35 pts. Thursday’s Gent’s 12 Hole Open Competition was won by Michael Gilmartin 26pts, while in 2nd was Pat Conroy 25 pts. The winning team from Friday Evening’s Scramble was Michael Simon, Michael Reid, Michael Gilmartin & Marie Gallagher. In Ladies Golf News, the Countess of Granard Foursomes held on the weekend of 21st/22nd May was won by the pairing of Joey Mullaney and Carmel Conlon. The runners up were Mandy Toolan and Marie Hanmore Cawley. Commiserations to the Seniors Team who were beaten by Strandhill on a scoreline of 3.5-1.5 last Wednesday 17th.  On a more positive note, a massive well done to Brendan Gaffney and his Jimmy Bruen team who defeated a Strandhill outfit, a club regarded as one of the kingpins of Connacht golf at that level. Shane O’Dowd & Jonathan Egan provided the decisive winning point away from home after fighting back from 3 down to seal victory on the 19th. Club Matchplay: Round 1 matches in the King Harmon Cup are now completed. Well done to all who have progressed. The deadline for round 2 matches to be played by is Saturday June 4th. Get into Golf Schools Program: On Tuesday some representatives from the club visited two primary schools in Boyle along with the CGIs participation officer Justin O’Byrne. The main aim of this program is to give kids their first taste of golf in a fun and safe environment, and to invite them to come along with their parents to an introductory night at the golf club this Thursday evening at 7.30pm for one hour. BOYLE MUSICAL SOCIETY
At a very well attended AGM tonight, our Director/Choreographer, Vivienne Moran and our Musical Director, Anne Kielty announced that Boyle Musical Society's 2016 production will be the spectacular musical, Hairspray! With music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman and a book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, Hairspray is based on the 1988 John Waters film of the same name. The songs include 1960s-style dance music and "downtown" rhythm and blues and it promises to be one hell of a show! Rehearsals will begin on September 1st and the show will run from Wed. November 16th until Sunday November 20th. Everybody is welcome to join.

BOYLE GOLF CLUB
Sunday 15th May saw the PGA Tankard competition for men won by Shane Loftus (17) 41 pts. In second was Michael Reid (16) 39 pts, gross Gary Carty (6) 27 pts and third was Paddy Nangle (15) 38 pts. Thursday 12th May 12 hole open competition was won by Gary Carty 28 pts, second place went to Tommy King 27 pts and in third was Vincent Egan 26 pts. Friday 13th scramble was won by Pat Conroy, Tish Perry, Pat Brogan and Annette Bartlett. The Club Foursomes Matchplay has reached the final four pairs. Semi final matches are to be played by May 28th. Coaching for junior players continues on Saturday morning at 11am. Newcomers are always welcome.

Sunday 8th May saw the18 Hole S/Ford  won by Martin Wynne (12) 42pts, in second was Michael Bannon 42pts, the gross prize was claimed by Brendan Gaffney, and in 3rd position was Michael Gilmartin (18) 38pts. The Golfer of the Year competition is now through round 5, and an updated leaderboard will be available on the website shortly.
Thursday 5th May saw the 12 Hole Mens Open won by Pat Conroy 26pts, 2nd Lorcan Egan 24pts, 3rd Seamus Gallagher 23pts and on Friday 6th Scramble was won by John McGuinn, Pat Conroy, Marie Gallagher.

Boyle Tidy Towns
A meeting will be held on Tuesday 10th May at 8pm in the Enterprise Centre, Boyle.  All are welcome to organise clean ups and planting for the town in preparation for the tourist season and Tidy Town Competition.  All participation would be appreciated. 

BMS MEETING
Boyle Musical Society will hold their Annual General Meeting on Wednesday May 11th at 8pm, in Dodd’s Crescent Bar. If anybody is wondering what is planned to follow up last year’s spectacular show then come along, because, hopefully details of this year’s show will be announced during the meeting. All past, present and future members are welcome to attend. That means everybody!

LAOCHRA star for King House show
Fresh from her celebrated performance in Laochra spectacular in Croke Park, singer Lisa Lambe heads to Boyle next month for another stirring 1916 commemoration. Laochra, which followed the Allianz Football League Final, thrilled fans of all counties and colours, bringing together more than 3,500 performers. It was Lambe, however, the former Celtic Woman star, who brought the crowd to its feet with her memorable rendition of The Foggy Dew. Lisa now heads to historic King House in Boyle, to star with Simon Morgan in the western premiere of Myles Dungan’s new 1916 show – The Count, The Countess & The Tommy. Friday 13th May is the date set for the first-ever west of Ireland performance of the show, which centres on the life and music of the celebrated Irish tenor Count John McCormack, and features some of the best-known songs of a hundred years ago. The show is a centrepiece of broadcaster Myles Dungan’s Paths to Freedom roadshow project, a unique package of lectures, presentations and shows remembering the Rising, one hundred years on. Tickets for both events are free, but booking is essential.

Coffee Morning
Boyle Credit Union will be holding a Coffee Morning in aid of the RSPCA on Friday 13th May in the Credit Union, Green Street, Boyle from 11.30 until 2.30. All welcome.

FREGOLI THEATRE PRESENTS
“The Pleasure Ground” by Jarlath Tivnan is back in Boyle on Saturday 14th May for one night only. A wonderful strong play that will stay with you after the lights go down will be taking place in St Josephs Hall, Boyle at 8.30. Tickets are now on sale in Una Bhan Tourism and Taylors Jeweller.

FREE Container Planting Demonstration 
Discover the secrets to planting a summer container and which plants to use for the best display. Ardcarne Garden Centre, Boyle Saturday 14th May 11.30 until 12.30.

CYCLING SPORTIVE
Details have been announced for the 2016 Lough Key Classic Cycling Sportive. The event will take place in Boyle on Sunday May 15th. Once again two routes will be on offer – 60k and 120k with a King of the Mountains optional extra that will take in Stauntons Brae on Kilronan Mountain.The previous two Classics have attracted large crowds and with the 2016 event moving to a Sunday, it is anticipated that there will be a big increase in entries. BOYLE GOLF CLUB
The first major of the year took place on the weekend of 30th April/1stMay. It is one which is unique in the golfing calendar as both ladies and gents compete for the top prize.  After 27 holes, Seamus Gallagher emerged the victor by 2 shots with a total score of 96 having qualified on 65 nett. This is Seamus’ second major in the space of two years, having claimed the 2014 Captain’s Prize. The weekend opened on a positive note with the successful running of our Quiz and Curry Night on Friday. The winning team was comprised of Aileen Madden, Claire Cryan, Aisling Gaughran & Lizzie O’Sullivan. In second place were Tommy King, Liam Mullaney, Michael Rush & Gary Carty. Thanks to Susan and Brendan who coordinated proceedings and to Mary who provided the catering. Golf lessons for juniors will resume on the morning of Saturday May 14th. Arrangements are also being made for the recommencement of a weekly golf class for adults. More details to follow.
